Polar Bear Plunge

by Tim Linden on January 2, 2009

These people were crazy, they went in the water when it was 18 degrees out and windy! You can see lots of people bundled up, the snow on the ground, and then crazy people in swim suits running in! My hands were hurting and cold for quite a while after, and I had gloves.. I took many photos of the 2009 North Kingstown Polar Bear Plunge, so if you were in it go check out the full gallery!

I don’t see anything wrong with it at all Tim:) I did the same thing on New Years Day but it was in a swimming pool that had no heat to it(it was outside of course)

It was no 18 degrees though that is for sure. The coldest it has been for me when we went in is the 20’s with ice chunks floating in the pool….

I like it. But I think if the shutter is a little bit faster and make it more clearer will be better. Thanks.

All I can say Tim is “Better them than me.”

Ah yes, there are more clearer ones in the full gallery, I just liked the blur as it shows their movement (the grown is clear so you know its not camera shake). These people were excited to run into the cold water!? LOL =P

Hi Tim-
I agree a slight blur is essential to convey a sense of motion, while stressing urgency in the moment, which is lost in a stop-action image achieved with a faster shutter speed. Good job!

I think the reverse would have been cooler if you could have panned the photo, in that small space you had, because it would have blurred the ground instead, and communicated that motion better. As the people were your subject, and with people you make that connection with the subject best through their faces.
